Happy Fall Y’all

Driving home recently my three-year-old shouted, “I’m so excited to go apple picking!” This excitement, the daily question of when we’re also going pumpkin picking, and his intent to wish people wherever we go a happy fall means a dream is coming true: I’ve passed on my love of this season. Double win, the baby’s fascination with our autumnal wreath and other decor tells me he’s on the right track too. I love the small parenting victories.

The enthusiasm is high for football, festivals, falling leaves, (the hope of) mild temperatures, cozy clothes, and all the baking. We decorate on the first day of fall, but Halloween decor waits until October because we’re not retailers. Please don’t mention the “C” word yet — we love you, C, but it’s not your turn.

Of course, it’s not perfect. Sometimes the heat of summer lingers, winter creeps in early, or rain spoils outdoor plans. We talk a lot about a fresh start at the new year or the beginning of spring. Back to school or to a familiar routine this time of year can echo that, but more, fall is a time that reminds us to be thankful, regardless of imperfections. The holiday hustle is imminent, but we can try to find that grateful attitude to carry over into and last through the winter doldrums. Maybe, eventually, maintain it year-round.

“When it comes to life the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.” –G.K. Chesterton
